Our value we're focusing on this half term: TEAMWORK

Welcome to the Grayswood CE School newsletter, bringing you an update of what's been happening during the month of May.

|
We must begin with a massive WELL DONE to our fantastic Year 6 class who have made us so incredibly proud with their efforts in their recent SATs.
"The children’s attitudes were super, taking the week in their stride. They were relaxed and confident, knowing that a) they are prepared and b) putting in effort and doing their best is all that is asked of them. Kites have worked incredibly hard over the year, and should be very proud of what they have each achieved."

As has now become customary, we arranged for an ice cream van to visit and provide all of Kites with a well-deserved treat to end off the week!

Grayswood in Bloom
Once again, The Flower Stand Battersea have very generously donated new plants and flowers which the Woodpeckers took great joy in planting. I am sure you will agree they look beautiful!
This recent spate of sunshine and showers will no doubt do them the world of good!

Swifts residential
"Last week, Swifts class set off on a 3 hour journey to have our residential at Hooke Court in Dorset. After arriving and having our lunch, we did a group activity called low ropes which was really fun! After that, we did orienteering and shell making, followed by dinner. After dinner, we read a story before getting ready for bed.
|
|
The next morning, we went to the trenches as it was WW1 day. The trenches were really muddy to walk through, we were pretending we were soldiers. That evening, we told war stories around the camp fire with tea and yummy biscuits.
|
|
On Wednesday it was Greek day. Sitting in a Greek hut, we learnt about the alphabet and the meaning of our names. We also printed our Greek names onto a plate we were allowed to keep!
In the evening, we listened to a Greek story and tried acting - it was VERY fun!
|
|
Thursday was our last full day, and we started it off by doing some team building. We then went to a farm before having a delicious BBQ.
Our final activity before heading home was rocket science, and we made our own rockets. We eventually all got onto the coach to go home. We were all very tired and excited about seeing our parents.
Hooke Court was AWESOME!"

Special Visitors to Woodpeckers
"We were really lucky in Woodpeckers because Tillie's chicks came to see us. They were called Lucky, Pippin, Stripe and Penguin. Lucky was called Lucky because he nearly died when he was born and he had a bad leg. He's ok now. Penguin was called penguin because he looks like a pengiun. We made a circle and they ran around our classroom. They flapped their wings and tried to fly. They were very cute. Thank you Mrs. Firmston for bringing them in".

Swifts Class Assembly
"This month Swifts had a Tudor-themed assembly. We introduced Henry VIII and who he was then spent time going through facts about famous figures from the time such as Mary I, Edward VI and Hans Holbien.
We then moved on to talk about children in poverty during Tudor times compared to those who were rich and privileged. We hope everyone enjoyed a snapshot of life in Tudor times."

Pentecost Service
Congratulations to the Kingfishers class on a wonderful Pentecost Service earlier this month.
They delivered their lines with confidence and smiled throughout the performance. It was lovely to have teachers throughout the school commenting on how well they had done.

Henry VIII comes to rule Grayswood
Robins had the most wonderful Kings and Queens Workshop on Monday 13th May, delivered by David Smith, a full time Henry VIII impersonator. His outfit alone cost thousands and some of the events he participates in are quite remarkable. He gave Robins an incredible day, delivering a session which was fit for….erm….a king. Beginning with a detailed discussion about a good number of past British monarchs, the children then played a board game of sorts, called ‘Execution’, which in practise was far less fatal than its title implies. Once done, the children then spent some time creating a clay coin, featuring the head of their chosen king or queen. Following lunch, where King Henry dined with them, they spent an hour or so learning how to dance, Tudor style and really did get into it! The day finished with an archery session in the playground with children ‘hunting’ deer, wild boar, pheasant and rabbit. It really was a fabulous day and a super way to kick off the week.'

Woodpecker Class Trip
Woodpeckers class visited Tilford Mosque earlier this month to learn
more about the Islamic religion and visit their place of worship.
Everyone at the Mosque was so welcoming and mentioned, on multiple occasions, how well-behaved and respectful we all were and thanked us for wearing headscarfs.
After looking inside the Mosque, each child was given a snack bag, which we were not expecting, and as you can imagine – they loved it!
A BIG thank you to Mrs Kirk, Mrs Strudwick and Mrs Starostin for volunteering to help us.

Good attendance is not just valuable, it's essential. Good attendance promotes good outcomes for pupils and provides them with the very best opportunity to reach their potential.
We regularly track the attendance for each child and communicate with parents where any concerns may be emerging. The government class attendance below 90% is as 'persistently absent' and under 50% 'severely absent'.
The percentage attendance figures for each class as a whole in May are:
|
1st. Wrens - 97.37%
2nd. Swifts - 97.08%
3rd. Kites - 96.77%
4th. Robins - 96.34%
5th. Woodpeckers - 96.31%
6th. Kingfishers - 95.48%
7th. Swallows - 94.37%
Well done Wrens on topping the leaderboard for another month! Superstars!

Preloved Uniform
Don't forget, we have a thriving pre-loved uniform service which now has its very own Instagram page: @grayswood_uniform
The uniform shop is really important for the school and raises a significant sum each year. Buying uniform second-hand is kinder on the pocket and the planet!
