October Newsletter

Welcome back to a blustery new half-term!

We have loved getting to hear all the lovely things the children got up to over the half-term break.

October was a busy but fun month for us here at Grayswood Primary CE School.

We began with a superb Harvest Festival at All Saints' Church in the village, delivered so confidently by our children in Woodpeckers. You all did a wonderful job!

New 'Values Award' for Grayswood

Another real highlight of the past month has been the launch of our 'Values Award Ceremony'.

We introduced a new assembly that raises the profile of our school values: love, kindness, respect, perseverance, teamwork and forgiveness.

{item_alt_tag}

At the end of each half term, your child's class teacher will nominate one pupil who lives out our school values every day. They will write a short blurb about that individual which is then read out by a School Governor in our 'Grayswood Values Assembly'. The children will not know who has been chosen until the very last sentence. Therefore, this requires them to listen carefully about why that particular child has been chosen. The child is given a certificate, a copy of their blurb and a green star badge that can be worn proudly on their uniform each day.

The reason we don't invite parents to this assembly is because it's all about the element of surprise! However, we know that you will be immensely proud of your child, and I'm sure you will all have a special way you will celebrate their success.

Congratulations this half-term to:

  • Clemmie in Wrens
  • Ava in Woodpeckers
  • Freddie C in Robins
  • Freddie R in Kingfishers
  • Kyra in Swallows
  • Huw in Swifts
  • Albie in Kites

School Ambassadors 2023-24

We are thrilled to announce our new School Ambassadors for this academic year- Ben, Coco, Florence and Xanthe!

They have started off the year confidently delivering an excellent speech at our prospective parent tours all about the wonderful things we offer at Grayswood.

If you would like to see what they said, you can find a copy of their speech on the school website.

I look forward to working with the School Ambassador team across the year to implement any suggestions or ideas they have to make our school even better.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ)

This year, schools in the Diocese are exploring Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ). At our Heads and Chairs briefing a few weeks ago, Elizabeth Olulari, National Education Lead for Racial Justice, led a thought-provoking session on EDIJ, with a focus on increasing awareness and engagement. Whilst the law may make it unlawful to discriminate against someone on the basis of having or being closely associated with someone who has a protected characteristic, we all need to do so much more than the law prescribes to make everyone feel included and valued to allow them to shine. Our schools are becoming more and more diverse and one of the things we can do to help everyone feel part of our community is to be aware of our unconscious biases and to recognise the power imbalances within society.

"Diversity is having all the pieces of the puzzle on the table, whereas inclusion is having them all fit together" (otlearning.online). Over the year, we will be working with our staff, parents and children on what EDIJ means and how we can become more inclusive and celebrate difference.

Elizabeth shared a few powerful images with us:

The theatre comes to Grayswood!

Whilst teachers and parents met for Parents' Evening on Thursday 19th October, the children enjoyed a visit by The Hobgoblin Theatre Company who performed ‘The Greatest Fairy Tale Ever Told’.

Judging by the smiles on the children's faces and the HUGE round of applause at the end, the children had a wonderful time! Thank you to The Hobgoblin Theatre Company.

Sporting News

Football Round-Up

October saw quite a lot of football action for Grayswood.

At the girls Year 4 and Year 6 Tillingbourne Football tournament, the Grayswood teams played with great determination and excellent sportsmanship. Although the Year 4 team narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-final, it was still a lovely afternoon of football during which the girls really improved.

We then had two Year 5 mixed teams and the Year 3 boys football team take part in another tournament at Tillingbourne School. There were some close matches with amazing saves by our goalkeepers. The Year 3 team reached the semi finals and then came up against very strong opposition. Well done to all the Grayswood players!

New Junior Sports Leaders

A few weeks ago, ten Year 2 children from Robins went down to the hall to complete Junior Sports Leader training. They learnt how to play lots of different games and activities which then will then be responsible for teaching other children how to play.

They are now trained to lead the morning exercises for Key Stage 1 and also lead PhysiFun activities in the playground at break times.

At the end of the training, there was a short quiz before each was given a bib, a badge and a certificate. Well done to you all!
