It's hard to believe we have already reached the end of another academic year! It really has been one to remember, with more trips, celebrations, awards and clubs than ever before! The children and staff have all worked incredibly hard and we are so blessed for each and every one of them.
Whilst we celebrate all we have achieved, a special mention must go to our Year 6 leavers, our wonderful Kites.
They have truly led by example, showing kindness and respect, working hard and giving back to our community. You will all be very much missed, but we know you have such wonderful adventures ahead as you move onto your new schools. Good luck and goodbye!

Statutory Assessment Results
As many of you will know, there are a number of statutory assessments which children in Years 1,2,4 and 6 are required to complete at the end of each academic year.
Thanks to the ongoing hard work of all our children and staff, we are pleased to share just a few highlights of our results:
- 83% children met GLD in EYFS
- 96% of our Year 1 children passed the Phonics Screening Check
- Above National averages for both our end of KS1 and end of KS2 SATs, with a large amount of children reaching Greater Depth
Although statutory assessments only show a snapshot of life at Grayswood, and do not celebrate all our other successes and achievements, we are thrilled with the outcome- well done!

Woodpeckers Bring History to Life
In June and July, Year 1 pupils continued their studies on Kings, Queens and Castles through Early Dance workshops with Kathrina Farrugia-Kriel. Exploring dance in the times of King Louis XIV in France, as well as Tudor England, the topics explored how dance flourished in the court culture as well as in social dancing. The steps in the dance classes helped students become more confident with marking space, honing their travelling steps like skips, gallops, and building up to a combination of steps.
The group dance brought together the key technical steps such as double steps (forward and backwards), alongside the combination of the steps explored in class. It was a great opportunity to explore dance, its histories and connections to broader topics, including music and culture.

Wrens Beach Day
At the start of the month, Wrens embarked on an unforgettable trip to West Wittering beach. We couldn't have asked for better weather, and a lovely day was had by all!
After a talk and demonstration from the lifeguards, the children wasted no time and immediately got to work building sandcastles, flying kites, shell hunting and playing football. Some of the Wrens decided to embrace their inner mermaids and, using the sand, created beautiful mermaid tails.
Of course, no beach trip is the complete without taking a dip in the sea! The children splashed around in the shallow waters, and it was a heartwarming sight to see their happiness and sense of freedom.

|
To cool off after all the fun in the sun, the children indulged in delicious ice lollies.
A huge thank you to the many parent volunteers, your support ensured that the trip ran smoothly and your help was greatly appreciated!

LAMDA Success
On Sunday 4th June 2023, Grayswood School hosted its first LAMDA Speech and Drama examination session.
26 talented pupils performed a selection of poems, monologues and duologues in front of examiner Mrs Watson, achieving 20 Distinctions and 6 high Merits.
"My friends and I have been preparing for the exam, and it was really good to perform in front of a lovely audience of family and friends in our LAMDA Showcase the week before, so the actual exam didn’t feel so scary. I felt proud and happy after the exam with Mrs Watson, and I can’t wait to start working on my new script!"

We really enjoyed ourselves because we got to learn lots more about the animals and their habitats. We had so much fun that we all wanted to go there again!"

Ancient Egypt comes to Grayswood
Last week, Kingfishers arrived in class to find Howard Carter’s discovery- the Tomb of Tutankhamun! Through role play, the children used torches to explore the inside of the tomb and recover and catalogue the objects found inside. A lively debate followed this when Kingfishers were challenged to think about the different viewpoints on removing the tomb objects. This discovery then informed their writing in English where they wrote a diary entry from the viewpoint of an assistant on the archaeological dig. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the Ancient Egyptian topic and this was a great way to end it.

Choir Performance
It has been less than 3 months since the Grayswood Choir Club began, and in such a short space of time the progress made has been outstanding. So much so that both our KS1 group and KS2 group treated the entire school to their very first public performance last week.
|
|
Both groups sang with smiles on their faces as they worked together to combine song and movement into an unforgettable show.

Celebrations for Year 6
It's been a jam-packed month of activities for our Kites.
There's been trips to Chessington, Wintershall and Alice Holt, a BBQ and movie night, a fundraising fair, a day of giving back to the community, and of course their fantastic production of Cinderella!
Lots of precious memories made during their final few weeks of primary school which we hope will remain with them forever.

Whole School Summer Walk
Making full use of our beautiful surroundings here in our picturesque South Downs village, Forest School Leader Mrs Spicer led the whole school on an epic walk this Thursday. Spending the full morning walking to and from 'Roly Poly Hill' as its affectionately known, the children had a wonderful time exploring our village and all its wonderful pathways.
Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to join us- we hope you enjoyed your morning out too.
